They are typically made from all natural or herbal ingredients, which contain stimulants that suppress appetite and increase metabolism. Some weight loss pills also contain mild diuretics, such as caffeine which helps to eliminate excess fluid. Some people report success with weight loss pills, but there are some that simply don’t work and all weight loss pills are not without risky side effects as the stimulates that are in over the counter weight loss pills can cause heart problems. Other side effects can include dizziness, nausea, chest pain, diarrhea, high blood pressure, nervousness, liver or kidney damage and serious problems such as stroke or seizures. Ingredients in over the counter weight loss pills that have been found to cause serious side effects are phenylpropanolamine (PPA), ephedra, and tiratricol. To minimize side effects from over the counter weight loss pills you should take only as directed not exceeding the recommended dosage. Prescription weight loss pills are considered medicines and prescribed by a physician. In the United States they are regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) unlike over the counter weight loss pills. Prescription weight loss pills are typically only prescribed for people with serious obesity problems and contain different ingredients that over the counter weight loss pills. Prescription weight loss pills work by either increasing serotonin, a chemical transmitter in the brain, to curb appetite or by inhibiting the absorption of fat in the intestine. Popular prescription weight loss pills include Phentermine, Xenical, Meridia, Redux, and Fenfluramine. |
