Rimonabant(Acomplia) is an anti-obesity drug that is marketed under the
trade name Acomplia that is manufactured by the French pharmaceutical
company, Sanofi-Aventis. The availability of Rimonabant (Acomplia) has been
widely anticipated as studies have shown it to be effective in not only
weight lose but with stopping smoking as well.
Rimonabant (Accomplia) works by blocking one of two receptors, the CB1
receptor, which is part of the Endocannabinoid System. The Endocannabinoid
System is thought to play an important role in regulating food intake and
energy expenditure from the body.
Studies have shown that the CB1 receptors
are present in the body’s fat cells
particularly those located in the part of
the brain called the hypothalamus, which
controls appetite. Cannabinoids attach
themselves to the CB1 receptors, which then
signal the body to take in more food.
Rimonabant (Accomplia) works differently than
other diet pills in that it specifically
targets and blocks the CB1 receptors, which
help regulate the Endocannabinoid System
resulting in less desire/cravings for food.
This same process also helps to reduce
tobacco dependence. Blocking of the CB1
receptors also has been shown to reduce
cardiovascular risk by lowering blood
pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
levels.
Rimonabant (Acomplia) is manufactured in 20
mg tablets and is available by prescription
only. The prescribed dose is 1 tablet per
day taken before breakfast. Rimonabant (Acomplia)
has been available since June 2006 in the UK
and will soon be available in Ireland,
Germany, Finland and Denmark. Sanofi has
plans to market Rimonabant under the trade
name Zimulti when it receives FDA approval
in the United States.
